Some more images from Canberra by Twoone and Kelly. Byrd hooked up a wall the day we left. It was a rush job but it got done!

For the first in a series of interviews we have planned for the WF blog I present Vitché from Brazil. Vitché first came to my attention in about 2003 back when I first discovered the amazing street art coming out of São Paolo by the likes of Os Gemeos and Herbert. The work of Vitché stood out from his contemporaries for its graphic quality and intensity, and I’ve been enjoying his work ever since.
A big thankyou to Mike Makatron and Hozy Guaragna for the help with translation of Portuguese.
Tell us how you started making art.
I think I started when I was born, I used to play with drawings, and that was fantastic to stimulate my creativity, but on the walls it was natural when I was 10 years old. I painted my first wall with the leftover paint that we used to mark the football field on the street that I used to live on, where I still live. The graffiti that we know began in the 80s, when I discovered hip hop, painting and break dancing, it was a really good time where the true school was on the streets.
Tell us a crazy story about painting on the streets in São Paolo.
I reckon São Paulo is a crazy city where everything can happen and you can be loved and hated within a short space of time. Everything happens really fast and the people are always running, I don’t know where to. Over the years there are a lot of crazy and different stories. You can paint a wall and a homeless person will clean your art because they think it is their house, or the council cleans up your graffiti with cheap paint which doesn’t last, making your painting return. This is a city with too many laws and many mixtures of cultures.
Al Stark has been making street art in Melbourne for almost as long as I can remember. Like my own, his work did a hand-brake turn when he immersed himself in folk art and came out dripping wet. His latest work is just awesome.
Although I never thought I’d have reason to mention Banksy on this blog I now have a good reason. Archival footage from Rash is used in Banksy’s film Exit Through the Gift Shop and features footage of my homies Ash Keating, James Dodd, Michael Porter, Regan Tamanui, Rone, Sync, Tower and Vexta (although featured in Rash I somehow I end up holding the sour grapes with this one). Exit through the gift shop will be screening at:
Sydney Film Festival : June 2 and 7 : Book here
ACMI : June 6 : Book here
I was invited to be a part of a panel discussion to coincide with this premiere but due to other commitments I won’t be making it, but don’t let that stop you… it should be very interesting.
Hey folks, wanted to share a really inspiring artist with you all. He’s a friend of mine on flickr and his work is full of joy and feeling. His name is Hernán Paganini and he hails from the colorful city of Buenos Aires. I’ve put a few pictures up here for you to enjoy, but take a look at his flickr page for a larger scope of personal and design work. His illustrations are beautiful. Come back for an interview with puloverchito coming to this page soon. Peace.
